When ‘13 Reasons Why’ released their first season, I, as a parent was caught unaware. I felt strongly, as did many, that their treatment of the subject of teen suicide was deeply provocative and troubling.I heard a lot about it in my private practice as a Grief Counselor as well.
To me, it was so irresponsible in it’s presentation of the issues that surround suicide that any benefit it could have brought to the subject was counteracted. I haven’t seen the next season yet, but it’s being released now and I hope they have taken the roundly scathing criticism to heart. Please read this article and be sure to check in with your teen about this series. Consider watching it together if you cannot prescreen it and establish an open and ongoing dialogue. Please share this post so that parents of teens see it. Thank you. www.jedfoundation.org/statement-experts-upcoming-release-13-reasons-season-2/ (Originally posted- 5/26/18)
